The Bahamas - A Mecca For Sports Tourism

The Islands of The Bahamas
have always been known for its beautiful, crystal clear waters, powered soft white sand beaches and near-perfect, year-round weather. For decades, visitors have been fascinated by the diverse culture and friendly people this 700-islands chain offers. Until recently, they have come to realize, understand and appreciate that the passion, spirit, vigor and strength of its people are being channeled through sports.

One of the fastest growing sectors in the global travel industry, sports tourism is big business - in fact it is estimated that annually, more than $600 billion dollar is derived from it.

According to Greg Rolle, former Olympian, pilot and director of Sports for the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism (BMOT), "sports transcend all areas of life - be it financial, social, cultural or emotional. Sports tourism bridges people in a very special way and is an incredible way to expose your country, distinguish culture, generate revenue, increase employment and deepen an economy.   More importantly, sports tourism provides a level of connectivity that perhaps no other sector can.  It is on this pillar, that the BMOT stands, to help revolutionize its country," he said.

Over a year ago, The BMOT expanded and accelerated its marketing initiatives to capitalize on the endless opportunities that exist in this emerging market. Its bold and creative marketing strategies to propel sports tourism in The Bahamas, internationally, is already proving to be a great source of revenue for the country and likewise build excitement about The Bahamas' brand.

Approximately 85% of the visitors that come to The Bahamas are from the United States of America and as such, the BMOT has formed partnerships with some of the leading sports entities in America.

Earlier this year, the International Association Athletics Federation (IAAF) held its first outdoor World Relays in Nassau, Bahamas.  This marked the first time the event was held outside of the USA.  The successful event, which was held at the newly renovated 15,000 seat Thomas A Robinson Stadium, attracted millions of viewers via ESPN's live television broadcasts, over 180 international media professionals and athletes from more than 40 countries.   The IAAF has already secured The Bahamas for its next outdoor races.

In addition to this, the BMOT recently teamed up with The Miami Heat, The Florida Panthers, Dan Marino and the Miami Dolphins - making the Islands of The Bahamas, the exclusive destination for its sporting groups (players, fans and followers).  The BMOT also has relationships with National Collegiate Athletic Association, Historically Black Colleges and Universities, sports celebrities and many others in creating, attracting and retaining signature sporting events with these entities in The Bahamas.

With more than just sun, sand, and sea - this sports destination is no doubt poised to achieving its goal, of being the premier sporting destination in the hemisphere.
