Dubai Calendar's April Line-Up Set to Wow City's Residents and Visitors With World-Class Selection of Sport, Fashion, Arts and Entertainment Events

Traditionally beginning with a humorous start, April in Dubai is sure to evoke smiles all round thanks to Dubai Calendar - the Emirate's one-stop resource for information on sporting, arts, culture, heritage and entertainment events. With a line-up for the month that will see world-class sporting matches, including the Pepsi Indian Premier League 2014, join vibrant community and cutting-edge cultural and fashion events, April in Dubai offers something for everyone from families and sport fans to fashionistas.

"There's no question that January, February and March's events are a tough act to follow, after the city welcomed the very first Dubai Food Festival and the ever-popular Dubai Shopping Festival, which attracted guests from across the world," said Hamad bin Mejren, executive director of Dubai's Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing, the department that oversees Dubai Calendar. "But Dubai has stepped it up a notch for April, hosting an array of events that are set to wow sporting, fashion and theatre fans alike. These events, as highlighted by Dubai Calendar, help position Dubai as a global events capital and are a key pillar in achieving the vision for Tourism 2020."

Among the highlights, sports enthusiasts will be bowled over with the announcement that the Pepsi Indian Premier League (IPL) will make its Dubai debut in April, with seven of the first phase matches played at the city's state of the art Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Dubai's first IPL face-off will see Royal Challengers Bangalore battle Mumbai Indians on Saturday, April 19, batting off at 2:30pm GST. Rounding out the IPL's UAE tour, Dubai will also host the closing game when Mumbai Indians face Sunrisers Hyderabad on Wednesday, April 30.

"Playing host to the IPL is an excellent opportunity for Dubai to once again showcase to the world that it is a dynamic, diverse and premier sporting destination," added Hamad bin Mejren. "The widespread appeal of the IPL will attract global attention and will put Dubai and the UAE firmly in the spotlight - further cementing the city's credentials as a global events hub."

From sports to superheroes, the third annual Middle East Film and Comic Con (Comic Con) transports itself to Dubai on April 3 - welcoming celebrity guests from the world of comic books and anime for a weekend filled with the quirky and creative. Highlights include an appearance by Hollywood A-Lister Seth Green as well as an auction of 20 Star Wars Storm Trooper Helmets, interpreted by the Enfant Terrible of the art world, Damien Hirst

Galloping towards the close of the city's equestrian season, the theatrical extravaganza Cavalia, which is in the midst of its run at Dubai World Trade Centre, will close on April 24. In Dubai for the first time, the revamped version of the internationally acclaimed production features 50 magnificent horses as well as aerialists and acrobats. From Cavalia to couture, fashionistas in the region are prepping for their close up with the third season of Fashion Forward (April 10 -13) featuring special guest and global style icon Alexa Chung. Dubai residents and guests can also Follow The Yellow Brick Road at the Madinat Jumeirah production of The Wizard of Oz (April 3 - 18), while global superstar Lionel Richie will keep crowds partying 'All Night Long' with a one night only appearance in the city on April 17. For the culturally inclined, Al Marmoom Heritage Festival (April 4 - 16) is sure to delight guests looking to experience a distinctly local event with camel races celebrating local culture.

"April is full to the brim with every possible kind of event," added Hamad bin Mejren. "It's going to be a sensational month for residents as well as the many visitors traveling to the Emirate during April. From cricket and Cavalia to comics and camels, the variety of April's event offering is as dynamic as the 200 nationalities that call this fantastic city home."
