Tantalo Boutique Hotel, A Decidedly Original Concept

New York City urbanism meets Panama contemporary style at boutique hotel Tántalo. The classic Panama City exterior gives way to a completely redesigned modern interior, but Tántalo keeps the Casco Viejo flavor in the details, starting with 13 uniquely designed rooms, the brainchild of 13 local artists using a variety of art mediums. Tántalo’s communal Restaurant, Tántalo Kitchen is perfect for sharing intriguing conversations around the exquisite eco-friendly Panama-Canal-harvested wood tables. Hang out at the Lounge bar and enjoy the lush interior green wall’s beautifully designed plant life decor.

Take an elevator ride or ascend the stairs tagged by a talented local graffiti artist up to Tántalo’s roofbar to enjoy the incredible view. Encima, Casco Viejo’s first roof top bar and lounge, boasts an uninterrupted 360-degree view of the ever-expanding Panama City Skyline and a breathtaking perspective of the historic churches, cathedrals and colonial buildings in Casco Viejo. Floored with wood harvested from the Panama Canal, Encima is open to hotel guests, visitors and plays host to special or private events. Fitted with AV/DJ hookups, Encima hosts local and international entertainment several nights each week.

The Tántalo Hotel is located in Casco Viejo, Panama City. Second only to the Panama Canal as most-popular destination in Panama and considered one of the most attractive Spanish colonial destinations in the Americas. Casco Viejo reflects the history of Panama intertwined with Spanish, French and American influences. The area began revitalization in 1997 when UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site. Visitors are treated to beautifully restored architecture intermixed within the ruins, creating a unique juxtaposition that must be seen.

Tántalo takes pride in providing guests with top-notch service while also caring for the environment. Throughout the facility, local items have been upcycled into furniture, flooring and décor. Rooms are sound insulated using a material made with recycled newspapers and phone books that hold cool air in and keep pests away. Tántalo conserves energy by using key-card activated electricity in each room and toilets are dual flush. The staff recycles beer and beverage bottles and maintains the 827 modular recycled plastic receptacles of live plants on the feature green wall with reclaimed rainwater from the Lounge’s skylight.

Other must visit sites around Casco Viejo are the historic plazas that are full of outdoor dining options, historic cathedrals dating back to the 18th century as well as a growing number of restaurants, shops and art galleries that provide various entertainment options and celebrate culture. Recently voted the ”#1 Destination for 2012” by the New York Times, Panama City also ranks No. 5 on National Geographic’s “100 Journeys of a Lifetime, The World’s Must-See Destinations.” Its distinct Caribbean Latin culture offers the perfect getaway just a 3–5 hour flight from the United States. Direct flights are available from Amsterdam, Spain and Asia.
