Pacific Coast Dream Machines Show (22nd annual), Half Moon Bay, California

When: April 28-29, 2012; 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

What: A spectacular showcase of motorized mechanical marvels from throughout the 20th and 21st centuries –– more than 2,000 ultra cool antique, vintage, classic, custom and exotic displays for public viewing. Automobiles ranging from hot rods, dragsters, customs, low riders, imports, street machines and muscle cars to fanciful touring, luxury, and sports cars; also exceptional vintage warbirds, classics from the 40s and 50s and homebuilt aircraft, tricked out trucks and motorcycles, Model T fire engines, antique engines and tractors, helicopter and plane rides, kinetic art, rolling sculptures, extreme toys, mega-modified machines, military vehicles, a display of advanced "green" technology vehicles, Demolition Derby, Unicycle Drag Racing, monster truck rides, go-kart rides, kid's amusements, food and live music.

A La Carte & Art (16th annual), Mountain View, California
When: May 5-6, 2012; 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.

What: The official kick-off to festival season in the Bay Area, this vibrant springtime celebration of the arts in the heart of Silicon Valley features a special salute to Cinco de Mayo with stellar live music on stage and street throughout downtown, a juried arts and crafts show with 200 of the west coast's top artists showing their latest handcrafted wares, artisan specialty food purveyors, health and wellness displays, an organic and green products showcase, home and garden exhibits, festive food and drink with premium wine, microbrews, margaritas and mojitos, a farmers' market with fresh seasonal produce, a classic car show, and exciting kids' amusements in the Tons of Fun Zone. Safeway World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off (39th annual), Half Moon Bay, California
When: Oct. 8, 2012; 7 a.m. - 11 a.m.

What: Superstar Gourd Growing Greats and their hard-to-believe, titanic orange orbs gather for the Safeway World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off in the World Pumpkin Capital of Half Moon Bay, California. A $5,000 bonus mega-prize will be awarded to any grower that breaks the world record at Half Moon Bay –– considered the "Super Bowl of Weigh-Offs". A host of accomplished, grizzled veteran growers contend for the coveted title, the $5,000 world record prize and $20,000 in additional prize money. In a pay-by-the-pound system, the winner will take home a hefty $6 per pound for the champion mega-pumpkin. Defending champion Leonardo Urena, of Napa, CA, set a new California State record and obliterated the competition at last year's weigh-off with his ungodly 1,704-pound Atlantic Giant. The grand champion gourd (along with the top five overall) will be on display at the Half Moon Bay Art & Pumpkin Festival, October 13-14, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Main Street.

Half Moon Bay Art & Pumpkin Festival (42nd annual), Half Moon Bay, California

When: Oct. 13-14, 2012; 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

What: The World Pumpkin Capital of Half Moon Bay celebrates its bountiful fall harvest and autumn splendor with a special display of gigantically enormous, heavyweight champion pumpkins, three stages of smashing entertainment, non-stop live music, the Great Pumpkin Parade, a bone-chilling Haunted House, harvest-inspired crafts, homestyle foods, world-class pumpkin carver Farmer Mike sculpting a monster 1,200+ pound pumpkin into a one-of-a-kind masterpiece, photos with the grand champion mega-gourd, pie-eating and costume contests, pumpkin carving for fun (not a contest), "Smashing Pumpkins: Battle of the Bands", the Take 5 Lounge with giant screen TV, festival-label wine and Mavericks Pumpkin Harvest Ale. Admission is free. The festival is presented by the Half Moon Bay Beautification Committee which has raised millions of dollars for civic causes and community service organizations.
