Bigger Team = Bigger Results
Making a record strong start in 2011, Sarawak is working hard to maintain its successful run by expanding its team in Kuala Lumpur, West Malaysia. Recording an impressive 80% success rate in 2010, the Sarawak Convention Bureau (SCB) attracted 42 conventions to the heart of the World’s oldest rainforest. These conventions are expected to generate nearly RM55 million in delegate expenditure. It’s a hard act to follow this year with increasing competition regionally and strong support for Malaysian bidders from competing national destinations.

The first six weeks of 2011 were the busiest ever in terms of new bid successes with confirmation of nine new international conferences. New business booked includes the:

∗ College of Radiology, AMM 2011 Annual General Meeting
In Four Points by Sheraton Kuching, 200 Delegates for 2 days
∗ 9th Combined Pediatric & Spine Congress 2013
In Borneo Convention Centre Kuching, 1030 Delegates for 4 days
∗ SME Enterprise Software Technology Conference and Exhibition (SESTECH BORNEO 2011)
In Borneo Convention Centre Kuching, 370 Delegates for 3 days
∗ 1st Borneo International Investment Conference 2011 (BIIC 2011)
In Borneo Convention Centre Kuching, 600 Delegates for 5 days
∗ World Clown Association Annual Convention 2013
In Kuching, 200 delegates for 5 days
∗ 2nd International Conference on Safety in Science and Science Education 2013
In Kuching, 500 delegates for 4 days
∗ ICOGRADA Design Week 2012
In Kuching, 500 delegates for 7 days
∗ 1st Regional Conference on Solar and Hybrid Energy
In Kuching, 500 delegates for 4 days
∗ Asia Pacific Organization for Cancer Prevention General Assembly 2012 – APOCP
In Pullman Kuching Hotel, 550 delegates for 4 days

Commenting on the bid win results, Mrs. Jill Henry, CEO of SCB said “Sarawak is rapidly gaining in popularity as an international meetings destination. With a brand new convention centre, new meetings hotels and the appeal of meeting in the magnificent Borneo rainforest, our bid win performance is continuing to improve.”

Sarawak Tackles the National Market From West Malaysia
One of the biggest untapped potential sources of MICE business for Sarawak is West Malaysia. Currently, 95% of Malaysia’s active association clients are headquartered in Kuala Lumpur (KL). Up to date, with the total of 137 bid win, 59% of the Bureau’s regional and international clients are based in West Malaysia. With this percentage on the rise and in order to attract more national business to Sarawak, SCB has increased its resource allocation and promotional activities in Kuala Lumpur. Under this new initiative, SCB targets to deliver a 33% increase in sales results in 2011. The new SCB branch office in Plaza Mont Kiara, Kuala Lumpur will also establish a close working relationship with the Malaysia Convention and Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB) team in research, sales and public relations.

Y.B. Dato’ Sri Dr. Muhammad Leo Michael Toyad
, Chairman of Sarawak Convention Bureau said, “The Bureau welcomes the new Federal subvention funding available from this year through the Malaysia Convention and Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB). We will be working very closely with MyCEB so that our convention hosts can now access both Federal and State Government funding support to help them bid for international conventions to be held here. The SCB already has a very high bid success rate of 80% in 2010 and when we add Federal support into the mix it takes our chances of success even higher". SCB will have a staff of five in Kuala Lumpur; two sales staff, two support staff and the relocation of Global Marketing and Corporate Affairs from Kuching to Kuala Lumpur.
