The Greater Columbus Convention Center (GCCC), managed by Legends Global, premier partner to the world's greatest live events, venues, and brands, successfully hosted the 38th Annual Arnold Sports Festival from March 5-8, transforming the expansive 1.8 million-square-foot facility into an unparalleled multi-sport destination serving more than 100,000 attendees from around the globe.

What began in 1976 as a one-day show with 4,000 people has grown into a four-day festival spanning three venues, with the GCCC serving as the primary location alongside the Hilton Columbus Downtown and Ohio Expo Center.

The event generated significant economic activity for the Columbus region, with an estimated direct visitor spend of $16.8 million. The partnerships with the GCCC, local hotels, transportation services, and restaurants created a comprehensive ecosystem that enhanced the attendee experience while benefiting the broader community.

"The Greater Columbus Convention Center is an exceptional venue partner for the Arnold Sports Festival," said Brent LaLonde, event director for Arnold Sports Festival. "The Arnold has a big impact on downtown Columbus from the hotels, restaurants, rideshare drivers, and more, and we are proud of the role we play on the impact of the city on one big weekend of the year."

The four-day event showcased the venue's versatility and operational excellence, with the GCCC hosting 20,000+ competing athletes across 25+ sports and events - more athletes than the Olympics when counting all amateur and professional sports combined. Simultaneously, the team managed the Arnold Expo featuring 800 booths from 276 exhibitors. The facility's 373,000 square feet of contiguous exhibit space, coupled with 74 meeting rooms and 114,000 square feet of ballroom space, was utilized to its fullest capacity, demonstrating why GCCC remains one of North America's premier convention destinations.

The Arnold Sports Festival utilizes every footprint of the GCCC, featuring unique programming not typical for convention centers, such as table tennis and powerlifting in meeting rooms, and transforming exhibit halls and ballrooms into championship arenas.

To accommodate the festival's diverse requirements, the GCCC operations team converted the 74,000-square-foot Battelle Grand Ballroom into a 4,076-seat championship bodybuilding theater. Simultaneously, Exhibit Hall D was transformed into the 2,250-seat Strongman Arena. Two custom stages were built within the exhibit halls to accommodate various competitions and demonstrations.

The venue also features special dedications to the Arnold Sports Festival, including Arnold Plaza, a 10,000-square-foot outdoor space that houses the Arnold Schwarzenegger Statue, providing a year-round photo opportunity for visitors.

“The Arnold Sports Festival showcases what’s possible when a world-class venue is paired with an exceptional team,” said Dean Dennis, general manager of the Greater Columbus Convention Center for Legends Global, which manages the venue. “Coordinating logistics across dozens of sports and thousands of athletes, our team is built to deliver these large events while with a high level of service guests expect at the GCCC.”

The GCCC's six parking facilities, offering 4,700 on-site parking spaces, accommodated 14,740 vehicles over the weekend, showcasing the venue's comprehensive infrastructure. The facility's advanced technology systems kept pace with modern demands, with the robust Wi-Fi network supporting 8,000 concurrent users throughout the event, enabling live streaming, social media engagement, and digital ticketing operations.

It takes approximately 180 staff to accommodate the festival throughout the weekend, and each year, the GCCC welcomes team members from various Legends Global properties to assist and provide real-time experience of an event at this magnitude. The facility also accommodates five local student groups and community organizations with access to the Arnold Expo, reinforcing the GCCC's role as a community asset.

The event catered to the diverse tastes and dietary requirements of athletes, exhibitors, and spectators from 80+ countries. Food and beverage partner Levy, developed specialty menus to accommodate various dietary restrictions, including vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and high-performance athlete nutrition requirements. The festival featured an impressive volume, including 990 pounds of protein in the form of brisket, pork shoulder, and chicken for the BBQ stations. In total, the team provided 2,000 pounds of protein over the weekend, approximately one ton of produce and 16,000+ bottles of water.

The GCCC continued its comprehensive recycling and waste reduction programs throughout the festival, partnering with local organizations to donate surplus food to community programs.

The GCCC works closely with the Arnold Sports Festival team year-round, typically planning the event a full year in advance in partnership with organizers and key vendors. This meticulous advance planning ensures seamless execution of one of the most complex multi-sport festivals in the world.
