Historic Roots and Community Celebrations Come Together for Memorial Day Weekend

Columbus, Mississippi , long recognized as one of the birthplaces of Memorial Day, invites visitors and residents alike to experience a meaningful and memorable Memorial Day weekend kickoff on Friday, May 22^nd and Saturday, May 23 ^rd

The story of Memorial Day in Columbus dates back to April 1866, when a group of local women gathered at Friendship Cemetery to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers, both Union and Confederate, following the Civil War. This act of compassion and unity became a defining moment in American history, helping inspire what would later become the national observance of Memorial Day. 

More than a century later, the legacy of those women continues to resonate. In 2010, President Barack Obama recognized the role of the Columbus Ladies during his Memorial Day address, acknowledging the city’s significant contribution to the origin of the holiday.

Today, Friendship Cemetery remains a powerful symbol of remembrance. As the final resting place for American soldiers from every major conflict, the cemetery serves as a focal point for Memorial Day observances and reflection.

“Memorial Day in Columbus is deeply rooted in our history and identity,” said Frances Glenn, tourism director for the Columbus-Lowndes Convention and Visitors Bureau. “It’s a time to honor those who paid the ultimate price, reflect on our shared past, and come together as a community. We invite visitors to experience not only the significance of this place, but also the welcoming spirit that defines Columbus.”

Throughout Memorial Day weekend, Columbus will host a variety of events that blend remembrance with celebration, offering something for visitors of all ages. Friday will feature placement of flags at Sandfield Cemetery, a World War I Memorial dedication at the Lowndes County Courthouse and a “Traditions, Taste and Tunes” celebration that evening, featuring a lively lineup of community events, including live music with Artistik, food trucks and family-friendly activities that highlight the culture and hospitality of Columbus.
