The SDTA Tourism Accelerator: Putting DEI on a fast track

A key to building a thriving tourism industry in San Diego is reflecting the diversity of the destination and promoting equity and inclusion. This award-winning program offers services designed to help these businesses be more successful and better connected with the local tourism industry.

The San Diego Tourism Authority's Tourism Accelerator promotes diversity, equity and inclusion in the local tourism industry by providing free membership, mentoring, education and networking opportunities to businesses owned by women, veterans, people of color, people with disabilities and members of the LGBTQIA+ community. Each year, 10 businesses are selected to participate in a cohort and receive over $15,000 in membership, marketing, and services.

Now in the program's third year, past Tourism Accelerator participants reported an increase in business opportunities, with 65% experiencing an increase in revenue and 45% creating new jobs. The program is nationally recognized, and has been replicated in several other cities already, with more in the works.
