MOUND BAYOU MUSEUM SHINES A LIGHT ON UNTOLD AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY
BY ACHIEVING HIGHER RESULTS – KENDRA FIPPS CROWE, CEO

Mound Bayou Museum is thrilled to unveil its mission of preserving and celebrating untold African American history with the upcoming BenVision Award Gala. Visit www.moundbayougala.com for more details.  Set to take place on August 11-12, 2023, in Mound Bayou, Mississippi, this two-day celebration will shed light on the remarkable achievements and resilience of African Americans throughout history.

Mound Bayou, MS is recognized as one of the oldest towns incorporated by African Americans. It's the home to extraordinary stories of enslaved individuals who defied adversity to become educated and even owned businesses on the plantations they were enslaved on. These narratives have often been overlooked or omitted from mainstream historical accounts, but Mound Bayou Museum is determined to change that.

"Our primary goal is to share and preserve the rich history of Mound Bayou and inspire other small towns across the country to do the same," said Co-Founder Hermon Johnson Jr. "By illuminating these untold stories, we can ensure that future generations fully understand and appreciate their African American heritage."

The achievements of Mound Bayou extend far beyond the plantation era. This town played a pivotal role in pioneering innovation and progress, founding the first Black manufacturing venture in the United States and establishing the country's first Health Maintenance Organization (HMO).

Since its opening, Mound Bayou Museum has become a gathering place for individuals, families, universities, and documentary crews seeking to immerse themselves in the town's rich heritage. The museum secured a $3 Million collection of African American artifacts from Dr. Alvin Simpson to open on July 10th, 2021 .

To enhance the visitor experience, the museum acquired props from the ABC series "Women of the Movement" and continues to collaborate with various documentaries. Mound Bayou Museum aims to collaborate with other civil rights and blues museums, creating a vibrant "Delta" destination that showcases the cultural and historical significance of the region.
