Tuskeegee Remembers The 50th Anniversary Of The March On Washington
Fifty years ago, Rev. Martin Luther King stood in front of thousands gathered on the National Mall and declared, “Let freedom ring!” On August 28th, communities all over the world celebrated King’s passionate call for racial and social equality. At Tuskegee, students, faculty, administrators and staff gathered at the bell in front Thrasher Hall to mark the March on Washington and King’s “I Have a Dream” speech. At precisely 2 p.m., several members of the university community including Tuskegee University President Gilbert L. Rochon and Student Government Association President Kyle Spencer, rang the historic bell 50 times with a mallet. The event was part of an international uniting of colleges and universities who rang their bells to honor King and the march. “Tuskegee University is proud to participate in the international celebration of the March on Washington,” Rochon said. “The significance of the ‘I Have a Dream’/ ‘Let Freedom Ring’ speech will continue to reverberate. We are not yet free, but we’re determined to continue the journey.” Pictured here is Spencer ringing the bell.
