San Diego Convention Center Receives 2010 Recycler Of The year Award From The City Of San Diego
The San Diego Convention Center Corporation (SDCCC) was selected by the City of San Diego to receive a 2010 Recycler of the Year Award. The award is part of the city’s 18th Annual Waste Reduction and Recycling Award Program honoring businesses that have implemented successful waste reduction, reuse, recycling and recycled product procurement programs. The Convention Center, along with other award winners, was honored by Mayor Jerry Sanders at SeaWorld. “As one of the nation’s leading convention facilities, the San Diego Convention Center takes its role as a green industry leader seriously,” said Brad Gessner, SDCCC general manager. “We take pride in our commitment to preserving the earth’s natural resources in our hometown and are honored to be recognized for our efforts by the City of San Diego.”

In 2009, more than 38 percent of the Convention Center’s diverted materials were recycled. That was an increase of more than 22 percent over 2008. The Convention Center recycles many items on an ongoing basis such as: paper, plastic, bottles, cans, cardboard, batteries, copper wire, ink cartridges, food waste, carpet, cooking oil, concrete, stainless steel and porcelain, among other recyclables. Also in 2009 the Convention Center improved energy efficiency by installing LED lighting in garage areas, held an e-recycling program for employees and contracted with a local company for green dry cleaning services. This is the second time the Convention Center has been honored by the City of San Diego for its recycling efforts. The Convention Center also received the 2008 Recycler of the Year Award.

The Convention Center has been committed to supporting and encouraging sustainable practices since the facility opened more than 20 years ago. Besides waste minimization and energy conservation, we have a broad program of other environmental practices – water conservation, food composting and even recycle cooking oil into biodiesel fuel – just to name a few. The San Diego Convention Center Corporation manages, markets and operates the San Diego Convention Center. In its 20-year history, the facility has proved to be a vital economic engine, generating $18 billion in economic impact and $360 million in tax dollars for the region.
