New Cobo Center Atrium Taking Shape
The white horizontal truss (center) forms the width of the dramatic, new atrium that is a centerpiece of the renovation of
Cobo Center
in Detroit. Steelworkers installed three more trusses like this one and framing the roof in preparation for adding ceiling glass panels in Late October. Once the trusses were installed, six existing support beams for the roof of the former Cobo Arena (center-left) were removed to expand the atrium space. The former arena is being rededicated as a 45,000-sq. ft. grand ballroom with 22,000 additional sq. ft. of meeting rooms below. The atrium will open for the North American International Auto Show in January 2013, with the ballroom and new meeting rooms coming in late spring.
