The
Pennsylvania Convention Center Authority (PCCA) announced that the Expansion and Renovation to the
Pennsylvania Convention Center achieved
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) certification. The Expansion’s LEED rating corresponds to the GOLD certification level under the LEED for New Construction rating system. LEED® is an internationally-recognized green building certification system, developed by the
U. S. Green Building Council (USGBC). It provides building owners and operators with guidelines for implementing practical and measurable green building design, construction, operations and maintenance solutions. The LEED rating system recognizes projects that develop and implement sustainable design strategies for better environmental performance.
“We are in the process of moving the entire facility to a more sustainable footprint,” said
Ahmeenah Young, president & CEO of the PCCA. From
Brownfield Redevelopment, to construction waste being diverted from landfills during the demolition process; to water use reduction and optimization of the facility’s energy performance; the PCCA expansion’s commitment to sustainability remains constant. In addition to illustrating environmental consciousness, green buildings provide economic benefits such as lower operating costs and better indoor environmental quality. Today’s customers are looking for facilities that consider the environment and efficient use of energy.
“Managing costs and looking for greater efficiencies are all part of our charge to be stewards of the taxpayers’ investment in this facility. We are excited about the certification,” stated Young. With significant investment by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in the largest public works project ever undertaken by the State, the PCCA manages one of the largest economic engines in southeastern Pennsylvania. The March 2011 opening yields 62% more space than before, totaling one million sq. ft. of salable convention space. The Pennsylvania Convention Center has a focus on the best customer service and state-of-the-art technology in the convention industry.
