New Convention Center To Open In Michigan's Upper Peninsula

Sweetgrass Golf Club and Island Resort & Casino to Expand its Conference Space

Local hospitality officials are excited about the new $2 million conference center expansion that broke ground recently at Island Resort & Casino in the town of Harris in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The resort, which owns and operates Sweetgrass Golf Club, will almost double banquet and meeting space to 17,400 sq. ft. with the completion of the new center, scheduled to come on line in April 2011. Seating capacity at the conference center will now top out at 828. Once it is completed, the convention center will allow concurrent events with a combination of five floor plans.

With a location adjacent to the Sweetgrass pro shop, the center is within an easy indoor walk of the resort’s 275 guest rooms, in-house restaurants, and the casino, boasting over 1,400 slot machines and round-the-clock Vegas-style gaming, along with craps, blackjack, roulette, and poker. Sweetgrass Golf Club and the Island Resort & Casino are owned and operated by the Hannahville Indian Community, a band of the Potawatomi Nation.
