Taos, NM Boasts Its One-Of-A-Kind Adventures

Taos, NM
– the town named a “best winter destination” by Travel & Leisure; one of the “best small towns in America” by Smithsonian Magazine; one of the “prettiest towns in America” by Forbes Magazine; and a “top arts destination” by American Style Magazine – is unveiling all that the town has to offer in true unique Taos fashion with its “Adventures de Taos.” Adventures de Taos highlights unique Taos adventures from the mouths of locals. People can discover and explore a variety of adventures by category:
  • Creative Adventures – includes everything from a moonlight hike to Williams Lake – the highest point in New Mexico – to llama trekking through the Rio Grande Gorge;
  • Cultural Adventures – includes photo safaris and painting classes from the exact spot where Georgia O’Keeffe painted her most famous works;
  • Active Adventures – includes a personal guided tour by a member of Taos Pueblo – the oldest continually inhabited Pueblo in the U.S – or experiencing the procession of the royalty during Taos Fiestas; and
  • Playful Adventures – includes activities such as visiting the dozen or so labyrinths around Taos to relaxing in a natural hot spring.
“Everything about Taos is an adventure, including getting to Taos where you drive along the spectacular Rio Grande gorge canyon,” explained Taos Mayor Darren Cordova. “We invite visitors to immerse themselves in Taos with one caveat – once you experience Taos, you may never leave.”

The Taos tourism website TAOS.org/adventure features a special section “Adventures de Taos,” with unique Taos adventures and places described by locals. In essence, it will be Taos – as locals know it – an insider’s peek into this special place

One of the unique adventures is provided by Taos artist Jonathon Sobol on creating art with an iPhone or iPad. He’s been in Taos for 29 years and utilizes the peace and serenity of Taos as a backdrop for his new high-tech medium – technology. His adventure can be found at http://taos.org/adventure/creative-adventures?/item/227/iPad-Painting-with-Jonathon-Sobol.

“When visitors come to town, they are always asking for the best spots, the off the beaten trail things to do, where do the locals hang out,” Mayor Cordova added. “We decided to unveil our secrets and give tourists everything they want to know – from the people who live here.”

Cool Taos Trivia:

  • The Rio Grande Valley (where Taos is located) is the second largest “rift” valley on earth. Portions of the area date to 29 million years ago. Petroglyphs abound. Taos Valley’s elevation ranges between 7,000 – 8,000 feet, with Wheeler Peak (the highest spot in New Mexico) above 13,000 feet.
  • Weather: Mild four seasons climate; arid high desert with brief summer monsoonal rains, mountain snows in the winter and clear crisp air with photogenic blue skies year round. Average sunshine per year: 300 days.
  • Taos Pueblo is the only UNESCO Living World Heritage Cultural Site in the U.S. (up there with culturally designated sites including Independence Hall, Mesa Verde, and the Statue of Liberty) and is a National Historic Landmark. It has been continuously inhabited for over 1,000 years.
Finally, to make Adventures de Taos even better, the Town is giving away an all-expense paid trip to Taos (including airfare) so people can create and experience their own Taos adventure.
